Along this 8-day/7-night journey, you'll explore the world of cacao, Mayan traditions, and sustainable living; welcoming hands-on learning and immersive cultural experiences in the tropics of Lanquin, Guatemala. This unique engaging adventure is led by the team of Tuqtuquilal, a regenerative center empowering a cooperative of over 70 cacao farmers. 


Through artisanal production and agroecology practices, each block of cacao supports the greater community by bringing access to international markets at fair wages. We'll not only learn about cacao from bean-to-bar but also study the successful cooperative model that has generated impact throughout the town of Lanquin. 


The Tuqtuquilal team is partnered with Naturally Smart Travel,  a trip coordination service, to expertly manage the logistics for the journey ahead.

Each day brings a new highlight:

- Day 1 // Welcome and Orientation: Orientation session and dinner featuring local cuisine, followed by a Mayan fire ceremony along the riverside

- Day 2 // Cacao Exploration: Comprehensive cacao tour at Tuqtuquilal, learning the full life cycle of cacao from bean to bar, including tree planting and 

- Day 3 // Family and Farming: Visit the cacao farm of a local family and cooperative member to learn about sustainable cacao farming (includes transport and lunch), and later, participate in a fermentation and drying class facilitated by TTQ experts.

- Day 4 // Culinary Traditions: Engage in a traditional Mayan cooking class, where you'll prepare and enjoy dishes like Bacha and Tayuyos, and learn the art of making chili oil.

- Day 5 // Cultural Festivities: Enjoy a lively marimba concert and participate in a sugar cane processing demonstration.

- Day 6 // Nature and Adventure: Embark on an all-day adventure to Semuc Champey, with transport provided. Explore the natural pools, hike scenic trails, and connect with nature.

- Day 7 // Reflection and Integration: Start the day with a guided Oropendula sunset hike followed by a closing ceremony to reflect on the journey and the knowledge gained.

- Day 8 // Stepping into your next journey

When you arrive at Lanquin, your host is waiting to greet you as you arrive to Tuqtuquilal

Following a seamless check-in process, you enjoy a siesta or take an afternoon tour of the town with fellow guests. 

After a peaceful afternoon, we host our Bienvenidos dinner to review the itinerary, discuss logistics, answer any questions, and embrace the beginning of a wonderful week of learning.

Workshop 1 // Crafting Chocolate: Heritage and Harmony

Our day begins with a warm welcome and exploration of the cacao farm, leaning the journey of cacao from pod to bean. We engage in a guided tour highlighting sustainable practices and the vital role of local farmers, focusing on fair trade initiatives like the Red Ratzum cooperative.

After enjoying a delicious lunch, we dive into a hands-on chocolate-making workshop, learning traditional Mesoamerican techniques and ingredients. The afternoon features cultural activities celebrating the heritage of cacao.

As the day concludes, we reflect on the benefits of fair trade and cooperative efforts, savoring our handcrafted chocolates in a delightful tasting session. This enriching experience fosters deep connections to the community and its vibrant culture.

Workshop 2 // From Cacao to Connection: A Family Day

Visiting local family farmers, we gain firsthand insight into the fascinating cycle of cacao cultivation and the principles of biodiverse agroforestry right on their property. We engage in discussions about sustainable farming practices and the intricate relationship between the land and the community.

After this enriching experience, we enjoy a delicious lunch at the farmers' home, savoring traditional dishes and sharing stories around the family table to foster a genuine connection with our hosts.

Following a delicious lunch, we continue our adventure with a refreshing swim in the nearby river, allowing us to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding the aldea. This intimate experience creates lasting memories and deepens our understanding of the local culture and agricultural practices.

Workshop 3 // Sustainable Roots: Planting the Future with Agroforestry

Honoring the rich heritage of the Maya Qeqchi food system, We begin by exploring the ancient practices that sustain the community, gaining insights into their sustainable methods and deep relationship with the land.

Delving into the principles of agroforestry, we participate in planting trees, contributing to the creation of a vibrant food forest that supports biodiversity and fosters resilience within the community. Our activities emphasize the importance of contour lines in designing productive landscapes, ensuring a harmonious balance between nature and agriculture.

This immersive experience deepens our understanding of the Qeqchi culture while nurturing a spirit of collaboration and stewardship for the environment. Together, we celebrate the beauty of sustainable practices and create lasting connections with both the community and the land.

Workshop 4 // Mapping the Landscape: Contour Lines and Conservation

This insightful day centers around Key Line Design and effective water management practices. We embark on a scenic walk to a breathtaking waterfall, where we'll collect valuable data by measuring contour lines, gaining a deeper understanding of the landscape and its water flow dynamics.

As we explore the natural beauty around us, we discuss the principles of Key Line Design, a sustainable approach that enhances water retention and soil health. This hands-on experience will allow us to apply our knowledge in real time, fostering a greater appreciation for how thoughtful water management can transform the land.

Throughout the journey, we connect with nature, learn practical skills, and foster a sense of stewardship for our environment, before enjoying an afternoon visiting Lanquin and enjoying some downtime.

Semuc Champey // Majestic Pools and Beauty Beneath the Canopy

Awaiting our arrival is a day trip to the breathtaking Semuc Champey in Guatemala! We set off early in the morning, eager to uncover the jewel of the jungle. Our adventure begins with a thrilling cave walk, where we explore fascinating underground formations. 

Next, we float peacefully down the river on tubes, surrounded by lush greenery. Feel the rush as we jump into the stunning waterfall of the lower pools, before embarking on a scenic hike to a panoramic vista that showcases the stunning landscapes. Later that afternoon, we dive into the enchanting limestone pools, where the vibrant turquoise waters beckon. 

After a day packed with adventure and natural beauty, we’ll return to Tuqtuquilal for a delightful closing dinner, sharing stories and memories from an unforgettable day. Join us for a perfect blend of exploration, fun, and connection with nature!

Winding Down: A Morning of Adventure and Reflection

Reflecting on the adventurous and educational week experienced, we are welcome to enjoy a leisurely morning to embrace relaxation or welcome an inner tube ride down the picturesque Lanquin River; the perfect opportunity to soak in the beauty of the surroundings one last time. 

After a delicious lunch, we gather for an engaging session where everyone takes center stage to share their closing presentations, showcasing informed designs and insights gleaned from our experiences throughout the journey. 

This day promises a blend of relaxation, connection, and reflection, creating a fitting conclusion to our memorable journey together!

On the final day of your memorable week, guests will start their morning with a delightful breakfast before departing for La Aurora International Airport.
